Lighthouse Hill, Staten Island- An SUV rammed head-on into a historic building last night, leaving extensive damage to the structure, according to officials.

Police say a Land Rover driven by a 73-year-old male crashed into Guyon Tavern—a landmark in Historic Richmond Town—at approximately 9:30 PM yesterday. The impact of the SUV hitting the building tore down the siding of rooms on both the first and second floors of the structure— the SUV came to a stop nose down in a ditch in front the building.

The Staten Island Advance reported that the driver of the Land Rover possibly suffered a diabetic emergency while driving. After the crash, he was transported to Staten Island Hospital in stable condition, according to an FDNY official.

The Guyon Tavern was unoccupied at the time of the incident and it appears the driver was the only one injured in the crash.
