East Village, Manhattan- people in the Village started their midweek workday with a bang.
At approximately 8:00 this morning, police received reports of of two people shot near Cooper Union Sq and East 6th Street. When officers arrived, they found a woman shot in the abdomen and a man next to her with a self-inflicted wound to the head. Medics rushed the man to Bellevue hospital and the the woman to Lennox Health Greenwich Village.
Later in the day officials stated the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital and the man is alive but in critical condition at Bellevue.
The NYPD are classifying the shooting as a domestic incident.
Patrol and Strategic Response officers remained on scene and closed the area off to pedestrian traffic as detectives arrived to investigate. Police tape was still up at 10:00 AM.
