Officer involved shooting in Manhattan

Hamilton Heights, Manhattan-Yesterday evening there was an officer involved shooting outside a 6 floor apartment in a building at 610 W 143 street. A 27-year-old man was struck in the leg by a bullet fired an NYPD officer. He was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in stable condition. No officers were injured.

At a press conference, assistant NYPD Chief Harrison stated that police had received a call just before 5:30 PM for an emotionally disturbed person who was trying to kill himself. According to Harrison, when two uniformed officers arrived at the apartment, they knocked on the door; the man opened it and came towards the officers with two knives in his hand. The officers told the man to drop the knives and moved back into the hallway.

Harrison said the man followed the officers into the hallway and then one of the two officers fired a single bullet, striking the man in the leg. The officers then provided first aid to the man until medics arrived on scene.

According to police, the man had stabbed himself in the stomach with a knife before calling 911. As of this afternoon, he is still in the hospital being treated for his wounds.

NYPD Commissioner O’Neil said today that the officers’ body cam footage from the incident will be released. This story will be updated when the department makes it available.
