East Village, Manhattan- Just before 6 PM this evening, in the middle of rush hour, a man was fatally struck by a southbound 6 train at Astor Place station. It is not clear right now if the man intentionally jumped in front of the train, or was on the tracks due to some other reason.

It took approximately an hour for rescue personnel to take the man’s body off the tracks.  Once he was removed, service was restored at the station. The incident caused extensive delays on uptown/downtown 6, 4 and 5 trains.
